Booking Experiences & Events

The Challenge
For Hostelworld users to go beyond booking just accommodation and to book an experience while being able to meet like minded travellers.

A new proposition from Hostelworld allowing our users to browse and book experiences around the world, 65% of our users are solo travellers and are keen to meet like minded people as well as have new interesting, fun and local experiences on their travels. I worked as UI/UX designer along with a fellow product designer on this project.

Research & Workshops

Firstly conducted user interviews and surveys to find out more about our users wants and needs and additional information about how they currently look for experiences and what their top experiences would be. Compiling our research we ran workshops to establish an empathy map for our users which we could turn into personas and affinity diagram to understand our users goals and pain points.

After establishing who our users would be and mapping out the task flow, we began wire-framing. We mapped out the task flow in low fidelity to gain a better understanding of what interactions our users would have with the web page.

Design Direction

After user testing our wireframes and ironing out any issues we then began ideating on design concepts for the responsive website. We created mood boards and iterated through many visual ideas before finalising the UI direction which we created using a design system. When we created a component we worked through all scenarios, then would get reviewed by entire design team to make sure it worked across platforms.

Throughout the process we shared our work to the wider team including the dev team who could ideate on a direction to build. We worked directly with the development team to create scalable components that could be used by future developers. We also worked to create UX best practices for the components.

The experiences is currently on phase 1 beta. Full results will be up soon but early signs are good with incoming bookings and reviews. With the experience offering we are offering our customers a broader catalogue of experiential travel with focus on user needs.
